Master Imaging Technologies for eXtended Reality (ITXR)

ITXR is a two-year (120 ECTS) Master which is part of the MANUTECH SLEIGHT Graduate School. It provides an innovative approach combining imaging technologies and extended reality and aims to train highly skilled experts in:

  • Computational Imaging (image processing and computer vision)
  • Machine Learning (data analysis, machine and deep learning)
  • Computational Appearance (Light Matter Interaction and Materials Appearance: from physics to realtime 3D visualization)
  • XR technologies

ITXRoffers a pedagogical programme that allows students to acquire, during the first semester, fondamental skills in programming, imagingdata analysis, XR devices. The second semester is dedicated to address topics around computational imaging (image processing and computer vision), machine and deep learning and 3D and data visualization.

The second year of this master’s degree aims to apply all the skills acquired with a semester 3 dedicated to specialized courses in: implementation of extended reality applicationslighting and visual perceptionmaterial appearance and computer vision, all applied to XR. The last semester is devoted to an internship with a master thesis writing.

ITXR is linked to the ERASMUS MUNDUS – PARTNERSHIP WITH JAPAN Master of Science Imaging and Light in Extended Reality (IMLEX) and the ERASMUS MUNDUS Master Photonics for Security Reliability and Safety (PSRS). It shares, during the first year, several courses of these 2 programmes which are also part of the MANUTECH SLEIGHT Graduate School.

Students in this master’s program will benefit from the innovative equipments of the IXR (Imaging and eXented Reality) technological platform.

Courses are taught in English and are structured according to the European Credit Transfer System with 120 credits over four semesters of full-time studies.

Applicant with at least a BSc degree level (180 ECTS) or equivalent, in computer vision, computer science, mathematics or equivalent are invited to apply. The applicant is required to have a good background in computer science.

Semester 4 – Master Thesis


You are

Holder of a bachelor’s degree (180 ECTS) or equivalent, in physics, optics, imaging, computer science or mathematics.


Requirements for admission

The following aspects of your application will be checked out by the academic assessors.

1. Academic record

Diploma prerequisite:
BSc degree level (i.e. 180 ECTS) or equivalent, in physics, optics, imaging science, computer science or mathematics. International students have to hold a graduate diploma equivalent of a graduate level of 180 ECTS in the European system. The applicant is required to have a good background in computer science.

Excellence of the applicant:
The applicant must have at least a C average on ECTS grading scale, or equivalent, during their undergraduate studies (
The ITXR team reserves the right to moderate this criterion according to the prestige of the diploma or the ranking of the University of Origin.

Mathematical requirements:
The students are expected to master the following topics

  •  Fundamental calculus including trigonometric functions, logarithms and the exponential function
  •  Fundamental linear algebra
  •  Fundamental complex calculus including the complex exponential function
  •  Series

2. Language

Language ability: Teaching and examination being given in English, the candidate must demonstrate sound knowledge of the language (the requirement for competence in English is equivalent to TOEFL ( with at least 213 points (computer based)/550 points (paper based)/82 points Internet based or IELTS at grade 6.5, or a Cambridge Proficiency Certificate of English at least grade C). A letter from your University will be accepted if the English language was the medium of teaching throughout your degree.
Knowledge of French is not compulsory but would be beneficial.

3. Motivation

Describe your motivation to undertake the Master and relevance to your professional development. Explain why you apply, your present situation, your interest in the degree, your ideas of research, and your intentions after this degree. Do not overlook your motivation statement since it is an integrant part of your application file.

4. Gender equality

Admission procedure

1 . The following documents will be required for each application:

  • The ITXR application should be completed with all information requested. The application is to submitted through our online application system at
  • A Curriculum Vitae (written in English) stating the main personal information (birth name, birth date, citizenship, address, …) the studies since high school (degrees, institutions, grades) as well as any professional experience and any other relevant information.
  • A dated and signed personal motivation statement, written in English, describing the reasons for application to the Master ITXR
  • Copies of transcripts or other academic records that give proof on the undergraduate and first graduate studies, including credits and grades achieved in each single subject. Documents from outside France must be either in English or in original language accompanied by a certified English translation. Depending on the home countries, applicants may be asked to provide Certificates of Authenticity issued by recognized diplomatic or administrative authorities.
  • Two dated and signed letters of recommendation (written in English).
  • A certificate of English language proficiency or a letter from your University as explained above.
  • A copy of your valid passport (non EU applicants) or identity card (EU applicants only) (validity should be extended to at least six months after the end of the two-year Master programme)
  • For non EU applicant only: an extract of your birth certificate translated in English or French.

2 . Selection, examination criteria and results
The ITXR team checks all documents against admission requirements and all complete applications are assessed.

Applications are evaluated by each academic coordinator, grading each criterion (academic record, language ability, motivation)for each application from 0 to 5 (5 Excellent, 4 Very good, 3 Good, 2 Satisfactory, 1 Sufficient, 0 Insufficient).

After ranking the applications and establishing the final list, each student is informed shortly afterwards by email of the outcome of the selection. A reserve list is also established in case of cancellation and relevant students are informed by email.

Procedure and dates

Successful applicants are notified of the outcome of their application by email (Ineligible applicants for administrative issues or weak academic background are notified along the way, at the time of the selection committee review) – usually within 10 business days.

Notification of the selection outcome = From 15/01/2021 to 01/06/2021 (for Non-European students) or to 15/06/2021 (for European students)

Prepare your stay in France = from 15/06/2021 (Successful applicants are encouraged to immediately prepare their stay in France, and notably immigration process)
Student agreement signature = 31/08/2021 (Effective enrolment of successful applicant is subject of conclusion and signing of a student agreement between the student and ITXR programme providing for rights and obligation of both parties).

Job opportunities

The Imaging Technologies for eXtended Reality master course is designed to address industries’ needs and challenges. It also opens up for international and challenging career opportunities, since on the international job market, the demand for postgraduates in computer vision, imaging science, machine learning, computer science and XR technologies as well as basic and applied research is very high.

Postgraduates will be qualified to work in any enterprise that uses digital media tools and systems, such as the imaging industry, the mobile industry, or the gaming industry.

Tuition fees

The total cost for this program is 10 750€ + CVEC, this total cost is funded as follows:

  • UJM grant: 10 000€
  • Student cost: 750 € + CVEC
  • CVEC 2020 : 92 €

So, the tuition fees are set to about 750€ per year. Those fees do not include health and public liability insurance.

You must also pay the Contribution Vie Etudiante et de Campus (CVEC) administrative fee. For the 2019-2020 academic year, its amount was set to € 91. This administrative fee is compulsory for all undergraduate, graduate and PhD students. It includes the health insurance, access to sport and cultural facilities of the university.

Fees will be paid to University Jean Monnet Saint-Etienne (UJM) in one instalment per year in Euros by bank transfer, cash or credit card.

The fees do not cover copies, books, accommodation, meals, travel expenses or general expenses. However, in each country, students will benefit from University meals (3,05 € / meal for 2011-2012), access to libraries and to a reserved computer room. Moreover the International Offices of each university, with long experience dealing with and assisting foreign students, will reserve University housing at a special rate for ITXR students (as for any other international students), and will offer their support to ITXR students.

For students with no Euro bank account, an account could be opened in France at special rate and conditions. The international office can provide support to help students with the bank opening.
